Make sure you know\u00a0if there are potential flood conditions on the river before you start your trip.<\/li>\n<li>Drought conditions can also affect your ability to safely paddle. Low levels expose sunken snags and other submerged objects. Sand bars can also become problems. Evaluate the water levels and speed of the river before your trip.<\/li>\n<li>Carry a deck compass, or GPS and map of the trail. Know where you are, where your access points are and how to get out in an emergency.<\/li>\n<li>If you are camping, make sure you know the approved camping locations.\u00a0Know if the camp sites are primitive or developed and pack the appropriate equipment.<\/li>\n<li>Check the forecast but always be prepared for quick changes in the weather.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/li><li  class=\"\"><div class=\"toggle-head\"><div class=\"toggle-number\">2<\/div><div class=\"toggle-title\">Communications<\/div><\/div><div class=\"toggle-content\"><ul>\n<li>Notify friends or family of your paddle itinerary. Make sure they know who to contact if you don\u2019t return on time. Write down where you intend to put in, take out and when you expect to return.<\/li>\n<li>For emergencies, call 911, but assume the cell coverage will be inadequate.<\/li>\n<li>If you are planning for an extended trip, consider a satellite phone, a VHF Marine radio, or a SPOT Personal satellite tracking system (can give outgoing message where cell phones do not work). Make sure everyone in your party knows how to operate the emergency equipment. Consider what power source to use for\u00a0this equipment.<\/li>\n<li>Carry a marine whistle, bell or horn within\u00a0easy reach for low visibility conditions.<\/li>\n<li>Carry flashlights and visual signal device or light\u00a0sticks, or flare gun and flares.<\/li>\n<li>Carry Waterproof GPS and extra batteries<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/li><li  class=\"\"><div class=\"toggle-head\"><div class=\"toggle-number\">3<\/div><div class=\"toggle-title\">Equipment<\/div><\/div><div class=\"toggle-content\"><ul>\n<li>Wear a U.S. Coast Guard approved personal flotation device (pfd) and keep it snug.<\/li>\n<li>Assess your boat\u2019s flotation needs. For flotation to work effectively it must fit snugly\u00a0into the craft and be securely tied into place.<\/li>\n<li>A lightweight paddle and spare paddle.<\/li>\n<li>Dry bags &amp; chart case for paddle guide &amp; maps,\u00a0cell phone, cameras, laptops, GPS, other\u00a0important items.<\/li>\n<li>First aid kit and personal medications.<\/li>\n<li>Food and water\u20141 gal\/person\/day. Carry more\u00a0than you think you need.<\/li>\n<li>Gear specifically for overnight trips.<\/li>\n<li>If using a kayak, take a sprayskirt\/cockpit cover\u00a0for rough and windy conditions.<\/li>\n<li>Waterproof matches.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/li><li  class=\"\"><div class=\"toggle-head\"><div class=\"toggle-number\">4<\/div><div class=\"toggle-title\">Safety Gear<\/div><\/div><div class=\"toggle-content\"><ul>\n<li>Be prepared for bad weather.<\/li>\n<li>Carry throw bags and other rescue gear.\u00a0Make sure you can use them.<\/li>\n<li>Carry a boat knife\u2013when there are ropes and\u00a0rigging, a knife is needed; this includes throw\u00a0bags and throw ropes.<\/li>\n<li>Pack a bilge pump and\/or bailer so that you can\u00a0reach it while paddling. Always carry some\u00a0device that can get water OUT of the boat.<\/li>\n<li>Self-rescue devices such as paddle float, slings,\u00a0and tow ropes<\/li>\n<li>Duct tape\/small repair kit<\/li>\n<li>Know how to re-enter your boat if you flip.<\/li>\n<li>Be able to secure all gear to the boat (kayaks\u00a0better to use the storage compartments) so nothing is lost if you flip.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/li><li  class=\"\"><div class=\"toggle-head\"><div class=\"toggle-number\">5<\/div><div class=\"toggle-title\">Clothes<\/div><\/div><div class=\"toggle-content\"><ul>\n<li>Always carry clothing to protect from wind and rain that can quickly compromise your safety and cause hypothermia, even in warm weather. Dress in layers. Temperature changes can occur rapidly even in summer<\/li>\n<li>Know the warning signs of hypothermia\u2014even in warm weather.<\/li>\n<li>Carry insect repellent, sunscreen, hats, sunglasses (with UV eye protection) and a strap.<\/li>\n<li>Proper footwear\u2014especially important if you will be near any oyster beds or climbing on any structures with barnacles.
